Og Mandino says “never will I allow myself to become so important, so wise, so dignified, so powerful, that I forget how to laugh at myself and my world. In this matter I will always remain as a child, for only as a child am I given the ability to look up to others; and so long as I look up to another I will never grow too long for my cot.”
To look up to others requires what Stephen Covey calls a paradigm shift. He says a paradigm is a model, theory or explanation of something else. It is the “lens” of our preconceived notions through which we view the world. If our paradigm is not close to reality, our attitudes, behaviors and responses will not be effective or appropriate. We will be as lost as a person trying to function in Vancouver with a map of Edmonton. We can only accomplish quantum improvement in our lives if we accomplish a paradigm shift resulting in a more accurate and effective view of the world. Some paradigm shifts may be fast (a blinding flash of the obvious), some are more slow (a change in character).
Paradigm shifts become increasingly more complex when addictions are introduced to the individual which will greatly hinder perceptions. For this reason the first step is completely admitting that we are powerless over our drug of choice and that our lives are unmanageable. First we need to decide if we are admitting or accepting. Is there a difference between admitting or accepting? When we say we are powerless over our drug of choice are we admitting we are powerless or are we accepting we are powerless? How does this affect our behavior?
At the Indigenous Wellness Training Society we assist individuals struggling with this chronic, progress and often fatal disease of substance use. Recovery is the foundation of our success. Once a person has fully submitted to the notion they are powerless over their addictive lifestyle we can then start shifting our paradigms. Admitting we are powerless is the beginning of a long and fruitful journey. Our hope is that people will choose our services to assist in starting this process. Please use the contact form if you have any questions or if you would like to begin the process of shifting your paradigm while looking up to others who have gone before us who were in similar situations and who have turned their life around.
